D&E Mechanical Building Services Drafting Traineeship
We are proud of our D&E Drafting Traineeship Program.
For over 35 years we have produced industry leading draftspersons that enjoy long and successful careers in the construction industry.
We have been proactive in contributing to industry initiatives, including developing an accredited drafting training program.
What kind of experience will I gain?
As part of the D&E drafting traineeship program, you will work with some of Australia’s best mechanical designers and on-site talent.
You will be provided with a combination of nationally accredited training as well as on the job training with mentoring and support.
You will have access to a wealth of experience and knowledge, ranging from mechanical system design and advanced digital technologies through to essential management skills around teamwork, communication and project management.
Throughout the traineeship each trainee is assigned a senior draftsperson who will be the trainee’s mentor. The mentor will ensure the trainee gains technical competencies in the latest innovative software and construction technologies, along with an acute understanding of company and industry standards and workflows for a range of real-world projects.
Trainee Draftsperson
Your journey begins as a team member within our projects division.
You will be enrolled in the AMCA Certificate IV in Engineering Drafting, which comprises five in person, one week training blocks over a 2.5-year period. The content delivered as part of this nationally accredited certification is supported by workplace training with D&E.
As a trainee you will start by completing fundamental drafting tasks to build up your skills and experience with CAD technology and knowledge of mechanical systems. Over time, you will take on more complex designs, including customised prefabrication, onsite cloud scanning, onsite digital set outs, advanced 3D clash detection and coordination programs, and increased experience in leading drafting project teams.
Some experience is also provided working with our on-site teams as they install various types of HVAC mechanical equipment. You will see various mechanical systems viewed as drawings and gain understanding of how things fit together in real-world situations.
Draftsperson
Once you have gained your Certificate IV in Engineering Drafting, you join our light commercial division as a qualified draftsperson, where you are responsible for delivering small projects of your own.
This fast-paced environment allows the opportunity to become confident in decision making and develop coordination, negotiation, self-resilience, autonomy, and time management skills.
Senior Draftsperson
Your journey continues as a draftsperson / senior draftsperson in our mid-major projects division, where you could lead a small team.
These larger projects offer the chance to develop people management skills and experience through dealings with builders, other trades and our own site people.
Career Progression and Pathways
A diverse range of exciting career pathways and progression opportunities are available for accomplished draftspersons at D&E, including:
- Working with a specialised team, such as prefabrication.
- Leading larger teams as a Senior Projects Draftsperson.
- Managing the drafting teams responsible for several projects as a Drafting Design Manager
How long does the program take to complete?
The duration of this drafting traineeship program varies and is tailored to suit the aptitude if each candidate.
Typically, a candidate spends 3 years as a trainee draftsperson, and 1-2 years as a draftsperson with our light commercial division before moving on to further career progression within the department or company.
